“As long as I was trying
to anticipate what you wanted
from me, as long as I was trying
to fulfill other people’s
expectations, I was in a losing
game, a game that I’d been
playing since I was a kid…that’s
what I want to focus on this
morning…letting go of other
people’s expectations so you can
live your own life, write your
own story, and live your own
legacy.”
This
quotation by Maria Shriver
reminds me of my “Ah-ha moment”
that I experience in 2008. My
name is Juneous A. Pettijohn and
I am the Founder of
Transforming U, LLC.
I came up with the idea for Transforming
U in 2005, but it was not
until 2009 that it become
official.
During that time, I became the jack-of-all-trades
and the master of nothing. In
other words, I was over
committing myself in a variety
of organizations for a variety
of selfish reasons. In my mind,
I wanted to do everything and be
everything to everyone.
The problem I had with that
is that I came up short. So on
July 31, 2008, I fulfilled my
last commitment, which was
completing my first yoga
teacher-training program, and
decided to dedicate the month of
August of 2008 to reconnecting
with myself. So after making a
conscious effort to eliminate
clutter from my life, and
reading, “Just Who Will You Be,”
by Maria Shriver, I made a
pledge to myself. With
that pledge, I made the
commitment to create a life
that works for me. I
also pledged:
- To say no and not feel
guilty or be made to feel
guilty about my decision
- To allow myself time to
think it over before
rendering a final decision
- To commit to activities
that are truly important to
me
- To have fun
- To sit down and write my
own mission statement
- To live my own legacy
- To pass it on
With this pledge, I was able
to fully establish
Transforming U. I am
a strong believer that we are
here for a reason. The
problem is that life happens and
we tend to lose our focus and
may become misdirected. My
mission is to start you on your
journey of self-discovery by
encouraging you to start asking
questions for yourself.
We all have a story to tell!
It is our life experiences that
shape and define us. By sharing
my story to the world, I hope
that I can inspire you to tell
your story. So what is your
story?
